Christus 10 Inch Cultured Marble

This will become a cherished family heirloom. Made of solid cast marble and measures 10 inches tall. Because it is solid marble it is washable and can be cleaned with soap and water. The original Christus statue by Sculptor Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen or Thorwaldsen (1770-1844), The original Christus was made of plaster in 1823 and was used to create the 11-foot marble version in 1839 that stands in the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen, Denmark There are not many places in the world, where a single artist has had an entire museum placed at the disposal of his works. But this is the case with Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen when he returned to Copenhagen in 1838 after having spent nearly 40 years in Rome and having attained fame as one of the greatest contemporary artists in sculpture. In Rome, he had made a sepulchral monument for Pope Pius VII in Sc. Peter\s Cathedral and numerous statues in the style of antiquity, while at the same time working on his masterpiece of Christ and the 12 Apostles which made him internationally known as the greatest sculptor of neo-classicism. After his death this was erected in the Copenhagen Cathedral, It is remarkable for not showing a suffering Christ. while his other works found a place in the museum, where Thorvaldsen rests to this day surrounded by his works. Christus, (carrara marble replica of the 1823 original, 3.36 m), is in the North Visitors Center, Temple Square, Salt Lake City. Thorvaldsen's statue of the resurrected Christ helps present LDS belief in Jesus Christ, the son of God and redeemer of the world. It stands in a rotunda before a mural of the universe to show that "by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created" (D&C 76:24) These white carrara marble statues of Christ, with his hands outstretched, inviting all to come to him, help present the central doctrine of the Church: that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God and the Savior and Redeemer of the world. (from the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, ed. Daniel H. Lodlow, 1992 Macmillan Reference, a Simon & Schuster Company) The first such statue acquired by the Church was a gift of Stephen L Richards, First Counselor to President David O. McKay (1951-1959). In 1966 this heroic-size (11 feet, 1 inch) Christus was placed in the North Visitors Center on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. The second Christus was commissioned for display in the Church's pavilion at the New York World's Fair (1964-1965) and was sculpted by Aldo Rebachi of Florence, Italy (House of Aldo e Gualtiero Rebechi of Pietrasanto, Italy). It was intended to help visitors understand that Latter-day Saints (or Mormons) are Christians. This statue was later placed in the Visitors Center on the grounds of the Los Angeles Temple. Additional Christus statues are currently located at visitors centers adjacent to temples in New Zealand; Hawaii; Mexico City; Washington, D.C.; and Mesa, Arizona. "Behold my hands and feet, that it is myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have." Luke 24:39 This reproduction is made of Solid cultured marble and stands 10" Tall. Makes a wonderful gift.
